Don Roberts Ice Rink began construction in 1973, which included the first steps of depressing the rink area, placing the refrigerating pipes, pouring the floor, and installing the refrigerating machinery. The second step of building the roof and partial sidewalls began in July of 1974. And work on the third step started in March of 1975, which consisted of installing permanent seats, completion of the sidewalls, finishing the locker rooms, and adding a brick facing. The project was completed in 1976 by completely enclosing the arena and adding a heating system. The multi-use space underwent renovations in 2013 with a new center-ice scoreboard, updated graphics, new boards, and a state-of-the-art sound system.
The ice surface is available October through March and seats 1,500 spectators. The arena can accommodate 3,000 spectators with chairs on the floor for special events such as concerts and conventions. The facility is mainly used by the Gustavus men's and women's hockey teams, but is also used for skating classes, outdoor education, and serves as an athletic and recreational facility for students, staff, and the community.
Originally called Lund Arena, the facility was renamed Don Roberts Ice Rink in 1998 to honor legendary Gustavus men's hockey coach Don Roberts, who spent 33 seasons as the head coach and retired with 532 wins and 13 MIAC championships.
